Sometimes in groups with other families, sometimes with my sister and her family, but mostly our immediate family. We have camped at Fort Wilderness, the Walt Disney World Campground and we have camped many times along the Peace River, at the Peace River Campground. For the last two years we have come to a tiny town called, Astor, just outside the Ocala National Forest, staying at Astor Landing, a small, private campground and marina right on the St. John's river. We found a place in Eustis, Florida called Santa's Christmas Tree Forest where we have combined a new tradition with our old tradition of camping. At this Christmas tree forest there is a tree farm and they have made a fun event out of it, with lots of activities for the kids. Santa visits, there is a fun maze, a petting zoo for the kids. The highlight of the event is when you wait for the hay ride to come by. If you just want to ride without buying a tree it is $1 per person. If you buy a tree the ride is free. You hop on and the tractor pulls the hay wagon out to the Christmas tree field. When a tree you might like catches your eye, you signal, the driver stops, and you get off the hay wagon armed with a measuring stick and a bow saw. Now you walk through the field, going from tree to tree until you find the one that you like the most. Once you finally get everyone to agree on a tree, one of you takes the bow saw and cuts the tree down. Once your tree is down you take it to the end of the row and wait for the hay wagon to come around. They pick you and your tree up and take you back to the main area where they will shake off the dry needles and net it up for you. For us in Florida, cutting down your own tree is a novelty, and this, combined with our Thanksgiving camping trip makes for a wonderful tradition and hopefully many wonderful memories for our family.
